Lil ' Fox update

Catherine was able to attend the Wildlife Rescue Center's open house this past weekend.

Executive Director Kim Rutledge was able to give Catherine an update and the first look at Lil ' Fox since she grabbed the poor flea and parasite ridden 4 paw cutie from the weeds along Hwy 21. See earlier blog post "Lil' Fox"

I will sum it up in one sentence. She is doing great  !!

Anticipated release in about two months. She has some growing to do !

A Peregrine Predicament

I had completed nine days in a row at work. I was home relaxing with no plans of going anywhere for anything. I actually went out the evening before, and bought a nice piece of sockeye salmon, asparagus,  and red potatoes for my mini celebration of the joy of days off.

I stood up, looked at Zeusy and said " You ready to make dinner? " He was ready. Of course the phone started ringing. (This really happened, you can ask Zeusy.) The caller ID said " Restricted. "  No way I was answering. Then the second call came in with a number I vaguely recognized,  then the voicemail. I will listen to that.

It was a buddy who works at the Clayton (Mo.) Police Dept. He said he was on the Forest Park Parkway with a Falcon that wouldn't fly. I asked him to catch it, and I would come and get it. As I explained the "How to" he sounded reluctant . I knew for sure he would do it, no police officer I know would be afraid. I said call me back when you have him. We hung up and a few moments later he had him and was taking him to the station. After shutting down the Parkway to grab it. Awesome !!

I called Catherine to see if she was available. She was the Catherine who started the lil' fox rescue.   She was right down the road and in no time we were on our way.

At the station he was inside a cell inside a tupperware bin. My buddy did not want to leave the lid on until I arrived, and figured a cell will keep the bird contained.

We arrived and performed an initial exam. The Falcon was only about 60 days old and probably recently fledged. Other wise we could not identify anything wrong, except a check of the keel area showed it probably had not eaten in a few days. We suspected that the Falcon just fledged and hadn't figured out life on it's own yet.

Off to the World Bird Sanctuary Wildlife Hospital. Once there I took the bird out of the copier paper box provided by the Clayton PD.

Catherine prepared a mew and a few mice in an attempt to get it to eat. It actually grabbed one and began eating while I was holding it. Never had either one of us seen that.

It was left over night and the Veterinarian Dr. Stacy performed her exam. She found no injury and suspects the newly fledged Falcon was trying to figure out it's world.

After a few days of eating good it will be released in it's territory.

Took so long I gave up on cooking the salmon and we ate Mexican and I arrived home late . Oh well......

Lil ' Fox

On the drive home from Bell Mountain Wilderness we were headed North on Old State Hwy 21, I was in the back seat with with Zeusy.  Alesi rode shotgun to our dear friend and driver Catherine as she drove us home.

Suddenly Catherine honked the horn swerved slightly then anxiously stated,  " I am going over it, I dont think I will hit it! "

I looked forward and saw a small fur ball in the middle of our lane.  I then turned around to see the fur ball was in the same spot. Missed by the horseless carriage.

My heart then sank as I watched cars one, two, and three drive over the little fur ball. Car four swerved into the oncoming lane.

But there sat fur ball, who then slinked off the road and into the weeds.

Catherine a devoted animal person who has performed wildlife rehabilitation in Africa, the Caymen Islands and the United States, jerked the vehicle to a stop. In a flash she was out the door and into the weeds. Quickly she came walking back holding by the scruff of the neck the most pathetic, flea and parasite ridden fox kit.

The lil' fox was in a very weakened state as well and Alesi hurriedly dumped the contents of a bag I handed her onto the floorboard to make room for lil' fox. The silly part is that the bag was an "Endangered Wolf Center" reusable shopping bag.

Alesi was in charge of the bag and lil' fox until we could drive the two hours to the "Wildlife Rescue Center" in Ballwin, Mo.  Because of the great reputation of the Wildlife Rescue Center we felt confident that this is the place lil' fox needs to be.

Alesi did what any animal girl would do and started snapping pictures. Later she donated one of the shirts she was wearing pushing to the bottom of the bag keeping her charge comfortable. She would not take her eyes off lil' fox exclaiming " He is so cute I cant stop staring and my eyes will burn out !"

Once at the resue center lil' fox was checked in and is going through parasite treatments and feeding to get its' strength back.

A volunteer and friend at the Wildlife Rescue Center Sherrie is keeping us updated on lil' fox's progress.

Mountain Lions win !

Congratulations to you all !

Missouri State Senate Bill SB738 is no longer a threat to Mountain Lions in Missouri !

Due to the furor it created it never left the committee it was assigned to, and a long wait until the closing of the Missouri General Assembly session began. The opposition to the bill continued until 6:00 pm, May 18th, 2012 when the Assembly closed it's session.

Mountain Lions are no longer under the threat of being hunted down like vile, evil monsters.

Mountain Lions can continue to re-colonize the places it was extirpated from so long ago.

The Missouri Department of Conservations' Mountain Lion Response Team can continue their important work of educating the public about Mountain Lions.

It is people like you who made the difference !

It is organizations like:
The Cougar Rewilding Foundation
The Mountain Lion Foundation
The Felidae Conservation Fund
The Cougar Fund
The BI-State Wildlife Hotline
The Natural Resources Defence Council
that made the difference !

Your voices have been heard !

Again Congratulations and I am humbled by the support you gave to this cause !

Long live Puma Concolor !

Mountain Lions as Invasive Species. What a joke !

Senator Stouffer told the newspaper the New American Republic he created SB738 so his constituents would not get in trouble for killing Mountain Lions.
Now that his bill is being reviewed by the Agricultural, Food Production, and Outdoor Resources committee, a committee he sits on , he now wants to define Mountain Lions as an "Invasive Species !" Despite the fact they have been here long before any European saw Missouri. Plus they have not caused damage to the State.
Since Stouffer seems to think he is the new crusader against invasive species I dare him to go after the real invasive species. Asian Carp, fescue, honeysuckle. Trout are not native to Missouri. I dare you to try and shutdown the five trout hatcheries the State runs. See what happens. Why pick and choose ?
It would look great in your bid for Missouri Secretary of State this election year.

(Anglers ,I am not anti-trout just anti-SB738)

Missouri State Senator Joseph Keaveny

Some may know and some may not.

I have been working hard for some time to change minds concerning an animal that gets little respect due to fear and ignorance here in Missouri. The Mountain Lion.

All I have put into it has come down to opposing a Bill before the Missouri State Senate. Bill SB738 would allow the killing of Mountain Lions for any reason. A bill to destroy a magnificent cat.

A bill must go before a Senate Commitee for review before a vote. The public hearing is today and I am unable to voice my opposition to this Bill.

I was left basically legally blind about a month ago due to the sudden onset of cataracts. I have had one sucessful surgery and will have another Thursday. Due to this it is unsafe for me to drive.

Can you imagine how low I felt not being able to speak for the Mountain Lion ?

I contacted my State Senator Joseph Keaveny via email letting him know of my current condition. I sent him the statement I had prepared.

Very shortly after, I recieved a response from Senator Keaveny assuring me that he would have my statement delivered to the commitee holding the public hearing.

Wow!! Words cannot express my gratitude to Senator Keaveny ! Thank you so much !

To have a State Senator step up and ensure the concerns of one of his constituents is addressed speaks volumes about Senator Keaveny's character. Hard-working, honorable , concerned, and a man who will act on his constituents behalf are in my description.

Thank you again,Senator !

Oppose Missouri SB738 !

The favorable consideration of this bill would continue to do damage to an intregal part of Missouri's eco-system. The Mountain Lion was stripped of State endangered species status in 2006. SB738 would not only take the Mountain Lions last piece of protection, but would make it a target for destruction in Missouri.

Mountain lions are an integral part of a healthy Missouri ecosystem.
To single out a specific species of wildlife for destruction harks of a time that the killing of wildlife drove species to the edge of extinction such as the American Bison. Some species such as the Passenger Pigeon were shot from the sky forever. Keystone Species such as Mountain Lions are crucial in the balance and health of our environment.
The Wildlife and natural resources in the State of Missouri were so devastated by the 1920s that the citizens made conservation and the forming of a conservation department a part of their State Constitution. This happened with great fore thought by the leaders of the times.

This selfless act made way for Missouri to better educate its' citizens and the understanding of ecology has grown by leaps and bounds. Keystone Species such as Mountain Lions are crucial in the balance and health of our environment. The preservation and conservation of declining wild cat populations has become an important international issue. The State of Missouri can easily become an international leader in the conservation of the Worlds' wild cats by choosing to be proud of having these amazing animals in its' borders. This would include effective conservation management, that encourages a well rounded and healthy eco-system.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is already engaging in effective mountain lion species management.
The Missouri Department of Conservation has been innovative in its' approach to Mountain Lions with the formation of a Mountain Lion Response Team. The Missouri Department of Conservation is more than capable of handling the Conservation of Mountain Lions.

Fear, ignorance, and myth feeds hatred towards mountain lions. As well as untruths in rumours and folklore.
More honest and factual information is more available on African Lions, and the Worlds Tigers than on Americas' amazing cat.
The Mountain Lion also called Cougar, Puma, Panther, and various other names has been misrepresented in our society and deserves a truthful view. Other States such as Arizona, Florida, and California are proud of their Mountain Lions and manage them effectively.

Truths about Mountain Lions can be found through organizations that work to conserve and truthfully inform everyone about one of the most beautiful creatures that exsist in America.

Why This Is Important
SB738 has been introduced to the Missouri State Senate floor by Missouri State Senator Bill Stouffer that would allow for the killing of Mountain Lions by anyone for any reason. The Mountain Lion was stripped of State endangered species status in 2006. SB738 would not only take the Mountain Lions last piece of protection, but would make it a target for destruction in Missouri.

Pelican Rescue

This American White Pelican was suffering from a broken wing and like most wildlife was not detered, and found a small lake with a lot of fish. The decision was made to take it from his paradise because the pond does freeze. This would leave him to starve.  So an armada of two canoes and a johnboat set sail to capture the grounded flyer. Despite one man going overboard (me) in the 18 degree weather, he was soon captured. The WBS Hospital will give him the utmost care and he will probably move to the zoo to live out his life in relative comfort.  Unfortunatly his injuries do not make him a release candidate.

Raptor Rehabilitation/A Very Special Eagle

This is a photo of the first wild Bald Eagle I ever participated in caring for. She was a big, beautiful raptor with the attitude that high, acrobatic flyers of nature possess . She came to the World Bird Sanctuary Wildlife hospital after hanging on a trot line over a river. Nerve damage to her wing left her unable to fly. Not one person ever gave up on her and after 18 months she was released back where she belonged, the wild.
If you are curious about the anklets/jesses and nylon line attached to her legs watch the video Scott Smith produced about her that shows more of her very cool, very special story. Just use this link....http://bit.ly/vwjglZ
